Fellows steers Heaton to ECB Cup group final

Gary Fellows steered Hanging Heaton into the ECB Cup group final with a fine all-round display against Barnsley last Sunday.

Captain Gary Fellows led the way with 3-20 as Barnsley slipped from 70-2 to 107 all out in 30.5 of their 45 overs.

Tom Chippendale continued his good early season form with 3-33, while David Stiff picked up 2-19 as Stephen Walters (38) was the only batsman to offer any resistance.

Fellows followed up with 53 not out from just 42 balls, as he hit eight fours and two sixes, while Joe Fraser made a brisk 34 from 23 balls including three fours and three sixes as Heaton took just 13.4 overs to reach their target.

Hanging Heaton will now travel to Harrogate in the group final on Sunday June 19.

A new-look Jack Hampshire Cup began last Sunday, with sides from the lower reaches of the Bradford Premier League joining those knocked out of the Priestley Cup preliminary round.

Heckmondwike & Carlinghow’s first-ever Jack Hampshire tie resulted in a nine-wicket loss to Hopton Mills. Michael Carroll (3-23) and Bradley Drake (3-14) combined to help dismiss Heckmondwike for 83, with opener Matthew Crowther (29) the only batsman to offer resistance to the Mills attack.

Ashley Mackereth continued his good form by hitting four sixes and six fours as he made an unbeaten 60 and Hopton reached their target in just 12.5 overs.

Crossbank Methodists bowed out, losing by eight to Gildersome.

Khalid Liaquat took 3-19 as Gildersome dismissed Crossbank for 90 before opener Liam Pearson hit 50 from just 28 balls to see his side home in 13.1 overs.

Ossett recorded an eight-wicket win over Wakefield St Michael’s, who were dismissed for 142, despite the efforts of Johnny Bowett, who made 74.

Opener Richard Whitehurst hit two sixes and nine fours in his 77 not out as Ossett won in 29.4 overs.

Khalid Usman (49no) shared a 98-run third-wicket stand with Whitehurst.

Conference side Azaad sent Championship outfit Hunslet Nelson crashing out with a 27-run victory, Buttershaw St Paul’s had an 80-run win over Great Preston, East Ardsley enjoyed an eight-wicket success at East Leeds, while Adwalton crept to a two-wicket win over Oulton, despite only chasing a mediocre total of 86.
