Leeds United boss Brian McDermott reckons the experience of new signing Marius Zaliukas can prove valuable to his team.

Lithuanian international Zaliukas completed his free transfer move to Elland Road over the weekend after a successful trial with the club.

The former Hearts captain has joined the club on an initial contract until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old central defender had spent a week training at Thorp Arch and played in a 3-3 draw in a development game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Zaliukas made more than 200 appearances in the Scottish Premier League and has 21 international caps, the most recent of which came in the recent World Cup qualifiers.

Leeds manager McDermott said: “I’m delighted to sign Marius.

“He is a player with a lot of experience, he’s played for his country and he’s a good age for a centre-half. It’s fantastic to have him on board.”
