Late strike earns Sedge draw with Scarborough

Liversedge twice came from behind and struck a minute from time to earn a deserved 2-2 draw against Northern Counties East League Premier Division leaders Scarborough last Saturday.

Sedge went into the game on the back of a four-match losing run but some of their best performances in recent seasons have come against the Seadogs.

Scarborough, backed by a large travelling support, took a 27th minute lead when Tom Adams glanced home a header to put them ahead and it remained 1-0 at half-time.

Early in the second half, James Riordan played a backpass to Ryan Blythe but the goalkeeper completely missed his clearance and the ball trickled towards the goal.

Blythe managed to dive on it just before the ball rolled into the net and Sedge survived the free-kick from six yards out.

Sedge introduced Danny Toronczak, Brook Newton and Gibril Bojang and the three substitutes had a big impact.

Athletic goalkeeper Steve Wilson dropped a cross and Toronczak pounced to score but Sedge were level for just a minute as Blythe attempted to tip Jimmy Beadle’s shot over the crossbar but the ball looped into the net.

Blythe made amends, brilliantly tipping a Ryan Blott shot over and Liversedge should have scored when Bojang squared a ball to Matthew Bugg but he side-footed against the foot of a post with the goal gaping.

Athletic’s Tom Adams was sent off for a reckless challenge on Chris Hirst and Liversedge’s deserved equaliser came in the final minute when James Rothell’s free-kick was fumbled and Hirst bundled home.

Liversedge: Blythe, Hewitt, Rothell, Butters, Wood, Riordan, McMahon (Bojang 70), Hirst, Bugg, Hall (Toronczak 60), Dennison (Newton 60). Subs (not used): Wardman, Hargreen).
