Chief among them was Nahki Wells, who laid on four goals - including a penalty earned as a result of his persistence and pace - but also impressive were the returning duo of Keith Southern and Calum Woods.

Southern in particular was excellent, marshalling the midfield and showing all his experience and guile to dominate a Barnsley midfield containing the once highly-rated ex-Arsenal youngster Emmanuel Frimpong.

Off the field, an impressive display from more than 800 Town fans in the Fantastic Media Lower means that the first experiment with a home ‘end’ to replace the Cowshed can be deemed a success.

Town fans have hoped for a proper singing section behind one goal at the stadium for a long time. In League One, the club opened the South Stand to home fans when away followings were expected to be no larger than a couple of hundred. But this isn’t an option in the Championship, where big clubs bring big followings.

The match against Barnsley was the first of two games where the Fantastic Media Lower will play host to a home ‘kop’ behind the goal. From afar, it looked and sounded great. The atmosphere was noticeably improved, even if the lack of a roof means some of the noise is lost.

Opinions of those who went in the Fantastic Media Lower seem universally positive, describing the atmosphere as ‘bouncing’. Many hope that it paves the way for a permanent home end where those who want to create an atmosphere can congregate and make some noise.

The atmosphere at the stadium does need improving. There have been games - Lincoln in the play-offs springs to mind - where the noise has been out of this world. But all too often it’s been fairly timid, and any steps the club and the fans can take to improve it are greatly welcomed.
