Griffiths sees Classic hopes ended with last 16 defeat

Wakefield’s Rob Dunford pushed pre tournament favourite Callum Wright all the way in the quarter-final before slipping to a 21-19 defeat and Wraight went on to reach the final before suffering defeat to Sheffield’s Dean Missere.

Missere was crowned the Sandal Classic champion after beating Shropshire’s Wraight 21-17 in the final in an event sponsored by Harpin’s Funeral Service for the 10th consecutive season.

A bumper crowd assembled at Sandal Bowling Club to enjoy the top class bowling on an immaculate and quick playing surface.

Missere claimed the title the hard way beating last year’s runner up Dan Petcher (Derbyshire) in the last 16 before taking out the 2016 and 2017 Classic winner Greg Smith (Warwick & Worcester) in the semi final.

Remarkably that was the first time anybody had defeated Smith on the Sandal green in 20 times of asking.

Wraight overcame a scare in the quarter finals to just edge out Dunford 21-19 and set up a semi final Jackson (Sheffield), who had defied the odds to beat Yorkshire’s Graeme Wilson 21-20 in his quarter final.

Wraight was a comfortable winner in the semi final beating Jackson 21-11 to set up the final with Missere.

The final was nip and tuck up all the way up to 17 across before Missere finished the game off with two fine pairs at the last two ends to run out a 21-17 winner.

Missere was presented with the winner’s trophy and the £1,000 cash prize whileWraight took home the £450 runners up prize. In total, £3,860 was paid out in prize money during the competition.

Sandal Bowling Club thanked their members and visitors who supported and contributed towards another successful competition.

Semi-Finals: Dean Missere 21, Greg Smith 18; Callum Wraight 21, Richard Jackson 11

Final: Dean Missere 21, Callum Wraight 17.

The Spen Valley Veterans Singles Handicap Merit competition will be held at Heckmondwike Bowling Club next Wednesday (July 18).

There is a scratch time of noon, with the competition starting 12.15pm.

Yorkshire County Crown Green Bowling Ladies team will be aiming to secure their place in the English Inter Counties semi-finals, when they play the final first round game against Merseyside this Sunday.

The home team, captained by New Mill’s Linda Gledhill, will be playing at Lindley BC, starting at 2pm, while the away team travel to Pensby BC, on the Wirral, with support welcome at both venues.

The two teams last met three years ago with Yorkshire emerging the victors and a repeat will see them into the last four.

The away team include Ossett Flying Horse bowler Alexis Lunn-Gadd and Hanging Heaton’s Karen Hill in their side.
