Liversedge 3

LIVERSEDGE produced a stunning late fightback on Monday to deny Scarborough victory in front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Liversedge almost made a perfect start when Gibril Bojang pulled the ball across goal and Joe Hewitt laid it back but Danny Toronczak lifted his shot over the crossbar.

Goalkeeper Hargreen pulled off a good save, while Chris Hannay cleared another Scarborough shot off the line.

Liversedge went ahead on the stroke of half-time when Danny Cooper fed Joe Jagger and he unleashed a superb 30-yard shot which flew over the goalkeeper and dipped into the net.

Scarborough came out for the second half all guns blazing and the Seadogs equalised after 55 minutes when James Bennett beat a defender and curled the ball home.

Tony Ackworth fired Scarborough ahead with a shot from the edge of the area and Ryan Blott’s shot from 20-yards found the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

Manager Eric Gilchrist immediately changed the Liversedge formation and introduced Adam Hill and Tate Williams.

After 86 minutes, the goalkeeper dropped a corner and Bojang was on hand to tap home and give the visitors hope.

Liversedge then grabbed a share of the spoils a minute from time when Peltier put Hewitt through on goal but he was felled by the goalkeeper.

Bojang kept his cool to slot home the resulting penalty and earn his side a well-earned point which leaves them eighth in the table.

Liversedge: Hargreeen, Hewitt, Rothwell, Bartram, Leach, Hannay, Peltier, Cooper (Hill 65), Toronczak (Williams 65), Bojang, Jagger.

Thackley 1

FORMER Liversedge goalkeeper Mark Bower produced a superb display to earn Thackley the derby spoils in Saturday’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division clash at Clayborn.

It was a cracking game with both sides having chances and Liversedge were unlucky not to take anything from the game having created four glorious chances in the second half only to be denied by Bower.

Adam Hill fed Gibril Bojang but he shot over early on, while Chris Wood somehow fired wide of an empty goal, either side of a Nick Matthews chance for Thackley.

James Rothell, Sedge’s new left back, cut in but shot over before Mark Bett produced a brilliant glancing header which went in off a post to put the visitors ahead.

Hill hit a post for Liversedge but it remained 1-0 at half-time.

Liversedge made a trio of substitutions midway through the second half and it seemed to pay off as they created a string of good chances.

Bower dived at full stretch to tip Kieran Corley’s effort wide soon after he came off the bench and the goalkeeper was alert two minutes later to tip another Corley shot over.

Bojang also had a shot tipped over before the home side’s best chance to equalise came a minute from full time when Darryl Leach fed Joe Jagger in front of goal but Bower produced a great reaction save to ensure Thackley held on for victory

Despite defeat to their neighbours there were plenty of positives for Liversedge to take from the derby game as Eric Gilchrist’s new-look team continue to gel together.

Liversedge: Hargreen, Hewitt, Rothell, Cooper (Corley 67), Leach, Riordan, Williams (Rogerson 59), Peltier, Wood, Bojang, Hill (Jagger 55).

Scott Hargreaves struck a third for Sports but Phabian Sylvester equalised for a third time before Paul Pyke sealed the Highlanders victory with a late goal, despite claims for offside.
