Kate receives invitation to World Student Games

GOOD things come to those who wait and for Kate Hutchinson her patience at the British Gas Swimming Championships brought her a silver medal and an invitation to the World Student Games in Shenzhen, China, in August.

Kate who hails from Thornhill and is a former pupil at Heckmondwike Grammar School who now swims for the University of Loughborough was ill at the start of the championships held in Manchester and her hopes in her favoured events such as the 200m Individual Medley(IM) took a pounding as she finished seventh in the final.

At one point Kate was so ill that she almost pulled out of the week-long event but her coach delayed the decision to see if she recovered. It was a sound idea Kate felt much better as later in the week.

In the 200m breaststroke Kate finished seventh in her heat in a time of 2-35-67, just good enough to qualify for the semi-final. She scraped into the final with another seventh place in the semi-final in an improved time of 2-33-67.

In the final Kate improved her time yet again to a personal best of 2-31-96 and claimed a bronze medal.

The top two swimmers qualified for the British team for the World Championships so Kate only just missed out.

However, things weren’t all over as in the last final Kate competed in the 400m IM and won a silver medal in a time of 4-46-55. She was second to world champion Hannah Miley (4-39-12).
