Late lapses costly as Moor exit Yorkshire Cup

Slaithwaite Saracens went into the tie having won their opening three matches in the Pennine League Premier Division but Moor had high hopes as they produced some impressive rugby to lead 16-14 approaching the final quarter only to allow their Huddersfield opponents off the hook.

Peter Robinson got the home side off to a great start when he scored the opening try and Andy Robinson converted.

Moor extended their advantage when good passing rugby allowed Anthony Boardman to score and make it 10-0.

Slaithwaite hit back with a converted try but Boardman went over for his second try, Andy Robinson added the conversion and Moor appeared to be in control leading 16-6.

However, they hadn’t accounted for Slaithwaite’s staying power and despite impressive displays from Danny Wardman, Phil Simpson, James Delaney, ben Hardacre and Dom Scanlon, Slaithwaite fought back to within two points to set up a pulsating finish.

The Saracens then finished strongly and as Moor tired, the visitors ran in a further 22 points to complete a 36-16 victory and book their place in the next round.

Ex-Swinton Lions players Richie and Darren Hawkyard led from the front for the Huddersfield side.
