Liversedge earn thrilling triumph

Liversedge 5

LIVERSEDGE picked up three vital points in their battle against relegation from the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, recording a thrilling victory over Bridlington at Clayborn last Saturday.

Billy Miller’s men showed great heart, twice coming from behind, while their strikeforce was in fine form, converting the chances created to ensure their best win of the season.

Liversedge fell a goal behind after 15 minutes when a good move saw Bridlington get to the by-line and send over a cross, which Craig Hogg tapped home.

However, the visitors’ lead lasted just a minute as Liversedge won a free-kick which Brook Newton crossed. Darryl Leach headed the ball back across goal and Andy Shuttleworth fired in.

Shuttleworth had his best game since returning to the club, Jamie Wasley made some good runs down the right, while right back Gareth Saville claimed the man-of-the-match award for a second game running although Miller gave the whole team praise.

Although Liversedge looked good going forward, they fell behind for a second time when Hogg headed home his second goal from a free-kick.

Again the home side battled back and they were awarded a penalty when the referee spotted a push on Cory Larkin and Andy Philp stepped up to convert the 35th minute spot kick.

Liversedge then went ahead for the first time as Newton made a good run and crossed to the edge of the area for James Hurtley to head home and they held a 3-2 advantage at half-time.

Bridlington got back on level terms 10 minutes into the second half as Alex Rhodes made a good run and cross for Scott Philips to convert and make it 3-3.

The entertainment continued and Sedge hit a purple patch to score two goals in seven minutes and take control.

Leach headed home after a scramble in the Bridlington area before Newton raced in on goal and although his initial shot was well saved, the ball rebounded to him and he made no mistake from the second attempt to make it 5-3.

Wasley then went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who saved at his feet before he was replaced by Adam Hill and the youngster created a good chance when he chased a through ball but his cross came to nothing.

Bridlington also looked good going forward and they were denied by an excellent save from Lee Ashforth to preserve Liversedge’s two-goal cushion and ensure they claimed three valuable points.
