Liversedge face tough quest in Vase

LIVERSEDGE face a tough quest tomorrow if they are to make further progress in this season’s FA Vase as they travel to Northern League Division One side Shildon in the second qualifying round (kick off 3pm).

Sedge have had mixed fortunes in their opening eight matches in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division having won three, drawn two and lost three.

Eric Gilchrist’s men now head north to face a Shildon side that is bang in form and are unbeaten in their opening five league games.

Shildon have also reached the second qualifying round of the FA Cup and last Saturday, thrashed South Shields 11-0, which goes some way to showing the task facing the Clayborners.

However, Sedge have already disposed of one side from the North East in the Vase, defeating North Shields 2-1 after extra time a fortnight ago.

Although Liversedge dominated for long periods of their first qualifying round, they appeared to be heading for an early exit until James Rothell’s 90th minute equaliser.

Sedge piled on the pressure in extra time and were rewarded when Kieran Corley struck a 118th minute winner to set up tomorrow’s clash.

Liversedge have since drawn 1-1 against Retford in the NCE Premier Division and last week slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Barton Town despite Matthew Bugg’s late strike.
