Maltby Main 0
LIVERSEDGE picked up another vital three points in their quest to avoid relegation from the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, recording a slender victory over Maltby Main last Saturday.
It was the first time this season that Liversedge have recorded back-to-back victories as they followed up their terrific midweek derby win over Brighouse with another success, which sees them open up a nine-point gap on second-bottom Dinnington.
Andy Shuttleworth had a terrific game in the middle of the park and was Liversedge’s man-of-the-match, while Rob Bordman had one of his best games for the club.
Gaz Saville and Joe Hewitt had fine games at full-backs, supported by Cory Larkin and Darryl Leach.
Liversedge took the lead after 23 minutes when Bordman’s corner was headed back across goal by Leach for Larkin to head home.
Goalkeeper Lee Ashforth was another to play a key role in the victory as he made several good saves.
Ashforth made a fine double save to deny Robert Branaghan and the goalkeeper was again alert to tip Lee Whittington’s free-kick over the crossbar as Liversedge went into the break with their slender lead intact.
Liversedge cleared a shot off the line following a goalmouth scramble early in the second half before Gibril Bojang was introduced to replace new signing Jamell Nawaz up front.
The game came to life in the final 10 minutes as Craig Mason’s shot hit the crossbar before Jamie Wasley was sent in on goal but saw his shot saved.
Ashforth was again alert to tip Oliver Warren’s shot over before Liversedge had a great chance to wrap up the points when Andy Philp played James Hurtley through but he was denied by a good save.
However, the Clayborner’s had done enough to secure a vital three points, which gives them breathing space over the three sides below them in the table.
Liversedge: Ashforth, Hewitt, Saville, Larkin, Leach, Hurtley, Bordman, Shuttleworth, Philp, Nawaz, (Bojang 60), Wasley.
Subs (not used): Helliwell, Keogh, White.
Nostell MW 2
LIVERSEDGE created enough chances to have got something from Tuesday night’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division clash before losing to a late penalty.
Rob Bordman had an early shot saved. Cory Larkin crossed for Andy Philp to head wide before Bordman set up Philp but his effort was saved.
Liversedge were caught on the break after 31 minutes when Neil Beardsmore did well to get to the by-line and crossed for Ernest Boafo to bundle home.
Liversedge should have equalised when the Nostell goalkeeper mis-kicked a clearance straight to Philp but he shot wide with the net at his mercy.
Jamie Wasley had an early second half effort saved before Joe Hewitt played Philp through and although he slotted home from a tight angle, he was ruled offside.
Liversedge drew level after 61 minutes when Hewitt played Bordman in and he made a good run and cross for Larkin to net with a great diving header.
Another good chance saw Andy Shuttleworth cross for Darryl Leach to head back across goal but Chris Hannay’s header was saved.
Boafo had also had good chances, denied by Lee Ashforth, before he was gifted the chance to win the game when Hannay fouled Beardsmore and the striker stepped up to convert the penalty.
Nostell’s substitute Craig Stevens should have added a third goal for his side late on but he scooped his shot over the crossbar in front of an open goal.
Liversedge: Ashforth, Hewitt, Saville, Hannay, Leach, Hurtley, Bordman (Fletcher 75), Shuttleworth, Philp (Newton 86), Larkin, Wasley (Hill 75). Sub (not used): Knight (gk).
