LIVERSEDGE suffered a home defeat to Retford United last Saturday, a result which saw their opponents move back to the top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Liversedge created a number of chances but found visiting goalkeeper James Fisher in terrific form, while Retford proved more clinical in front of goal.

Sedge fell behind after just three minutes when Retford captain Ricky Chambers sent over a cross from the wing and as the ball floated towards goal, James Waggett back peddled but could only manage to tip it into the net.

Liversedge then had a good spell as Nathan Cartman stepped over the ball, allowing it to roll for James Hurtley to shoot but Fisher palmed it away for a corner.

Darryl Leach ventured forward for the corner but his header was blocked on the goalline.

Wasley showed quick feet inside the penalty area as he skipped past two defenders to go one-on-one with Fisher but the goalkeeper made another excellent save to deny him.

Warren Hatfield then hit a post from a good Retford chance and score remained 1-0 at half-time.

Hatfield rectified his mistake early in the second half when he was given space and he controlled the ball and rifled home United’s second.

Chris Hanney almost pulled a goal back when his 65th minute fierce shot from the edge of the area was again well saved by Fisher before the Liversedge man was sent off just a minute later.

Hanney was fouled near halfway but the referee pointed as though to award Retford the free-kick.

Hanney remonstrated with the official and was sent off for foul and abusive language before the referee realised his initial error and gave Sedge the free-kick.

The 10 men of Liversedge threatened when substitute Danny Cooper produced a great crossfield ball but Alex Hallam dragged his shot wide.

Soon after Cooper barged over an attacker in the area and Chambers slotted home an 85th minute penalty before Retford’s Chris Hall rounded Waggett to seal his side’s win.

Liversedge: Waggett, Larkin (Cooper 73), Horsman, White, Leach, Hopkins, Hurtley (Bordman 55), Hanney, Wasley (Driscoll 73), Cartman, Hallam. Sub (unused): Knight.
