Mixed fortunes for Wyke sides

WYKE slipped to a 22-16 defeat at Illingworth in Pennine League Division Two last Saturday.

Wyke were deciamted by injuries to key players and fell behind to an early converted try but responded well and levelled when Matty Harrison dummied over and Aidy Doherty converted.

Michael Silver marked his long awaited return to first-team duty with a tremendous try when he took a ball from captain Ian Watkinson and charged over, Doherty converted before Ashley Hutchinson added another try to put Wyke 16-6 up.

Illingworth piled on the pressure after the break and scored two tries before snatching victory when the ball was launched high and with the sun in his eyes full-back John Rayner spilled it and Illingworth gathered to score the winner.

n Wyke A fought from behind to win 34-24 at Selby in Division Seven.

Cliff Bacon, Gary Smith and Aiden Melling scored first half tries, with Bradley Ellis adding two goals but Wyke trailed 18-16.

Two second-half scores from Tony Godfrey and another from Danny Stocks, all converted by Ellis sealed Wyke’s win.

n With work continuing at Appleton Academy for Wyke’s new changing facilities, both teams are away again this week with the first at Underbank Rangers and A team at Garforth.
