Moorlands secure victory following dramatic collapse

A remarkable spell of bowling saw Moorlands clinch a dramatic victory over Shelley in the Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership last Saturday.

There was an unusual setting across the district with all matches starting earlier and being reduced to 30 overs-a-side to allow players and officials to watch England’s World Cup game against Sweden.

Moorlands had half centuries from Nathan Rabnott and Michael Rounding to thank as they posted 160-5.

The pair shared a 95-run second wicket stand as Rabnott struck eight fours and two sixes in his top score of 60, while Rounding supported with 51 which contained six fours and a six.

Shelley were in an excellent position to go on and clinch victory after middle-order batters Mo Bhoola (34) and Ranjith Bandula-Don (40) got the home side up to 133-5.

Nicky Smith (4-33) and Darrell Sykes (4-59) helped spark a dramatic collapse which saw the last five wickets fall for just seven runs as Moorlands claimed a seventh win of the season, which leaves them eighth in the table.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers slipped to a 96-run defeat at home to Armitage Bridge and they are two points above second-bottom Golcar and a point ahead of Shelley.

West’s 123 not out came in 87 balls with 14 fours and three sixes as Bridge racked up the runs at Wellhouse Lane.

Robin Broom (47) also chipped in as Armitage Bridge made the league’s biggest score of the afternoon, racking up 252-6 from 30 overs.

Parish openers Tim Orrell (47) and David Bolt (30) got the reply off to a bright start putting on 52 runs for the opening wicket but they lacked support as all 10 wickets then fell for 106 runs.

Tony Treadaway (4-55) and Daniel Moorhouse (4-34) had Parish in a spin as they were 158 all out and are in a fight against relegation involving the bottom four clubs.

Moorlands can climb into the top six on Saturday if they overcome a Thongsbridge side who are just two points above them, while Parish travel to bottom side Cawthorne in a crunch clash.

Mirfield have slipped to seventh bottom of the Conference after suffering a ninth defeat of the season at the hands of Denby Dale.

Josh Ramsay struck 54 opening the batting for Mirfield in an innings which contained 10 fours and a six.

He was supported in a 76-run opening wicket stand by captain Adam Goldthorpe, who made 41.

The Mirfield innings was further boosted by a quickfire 34 from Nas Saudagar, as he struck five fours and a six in a 25-ball knock which helped them up to 166-7 at the close, with Fred Stower (3-37) pick of the Denby Dale bowlers.

Saudagar (3-31) helped reduce Denby Dale to 34-4 in reply but a half century from Mirza Tehseen (51) and 48 not out by Hywel Senior saw the home side secure a four-wicket win with 15 balls to spare.

Mirfield travel to third-bottom Thurstonland on Saturday.
