CLECKHEATON are gearing up for their biggest game of the season when they welcome near neighbours Morley to Moorend in North One East tomorrow (kick off 3pm).

Although Old Brodleians are regarded as Cleckheaton’s traditional rivals there is nothing more the Moorend faithful enjoy than a visit of the men from Scatcherd Lane.

It is four seasons since the sides last crossed swords, when Cleckheaton won 10-0 thanks to an inspirational display from Dominic Brambani, who spent a short spell at Cleck in between stints playing rugby league for Sheffield Eagles, in Australia and then at Dewsbury Rams.

Cleckheaton official Alan Bentley is relishing the derby clash saying: “Of course the bragging rights are at stake but the rivalry with Morley only came when we started climbing the leagues and a lot of players began switching between the clubs, something that never used to happen.

“Paul Hemmingway has put hours of work into our pitch and it is in the best condition it ever has been. We are looking forward to a good game.”

Around 150 supporters and sponsors will attend a sell-out pre-match lunch and whenever Cleckheaton host these popular events it always helps create a cracking atmosphere.

Back row man Rich Piper is bang in form and he will certainly be fired up for the occasion, while Iain Gordon produced a fine kicking game as Cleck pushed Beverley all the way last week before late scores condemned them to an unfortunate 29-19 defeat.

n Cleckheaton Kestrels have won their first seven matches in the Merit League Championship and face a key game with a trip to fellow unbeaten side Ilkley.
