Nadeem stars on top night of boxing

The 14-year-old fighting out of the KBW Gym in Savile Town recorded a TKO victory in the 60 KG’s class and was awarded boxer of the night.

Dhameen Rasheed, 17, won his bout with a first-round knockout in the 62KG’s category, while KBW team-mate Haroon Javed won with a unanimous decision.

Ayub Khan’s first-round stoppage win was voted fight of the night, although Haroon Arif and Areeb Cheema must both surely have pushed him close after winning their bouts on a split decisions following three nip-and-tuck rounds.

Other fighters from KBW competing on the Town Hall show were Abdul Hussain and Akeel Khaliq, while boxers came from as far as London to take part.

This was the first amateur boxing event KBW have staged and it attracted a sell-out crowd to the Town Hall, for the 15 fight card, with some excellent skill of boxing on show.

Several Dewsbury fighters were competing for the first time and produced some fine displays in front of the enthusiastic crowd.

Team GB boxer and Olympic Games prospect Qais Ashfaq was involved in a controversial bout, which resulted in him being disqualified for alleged illegal handwraps, despite appearing to register a comfortable victory.

KBW have lodged an official complaint with the ABA regarding the decision.

Ashfaq, who is from Leeds but trains out of KBW, was back with Team GB this week, competing in the EUBC European Olympic Hopes Boxing Championships in Kalingrad, Russia. The competition is for boxers aged 19 to 22 years old and began on Monday and runs until December 18.

n Local big businesses Al Murad, BMS and Kozee Sleep helped support the Dewsbury show and company directors were among the people handing out awards to the young boxers.

KBW also raised a significant amount of money for the Gaza appeal.
