Teacher’s farewell

In October 1982 the Spenborough Guardian wrote about the retirement of my former teacher.

Jack Sandiford taught woodwork and technical drawing to pupils of Heckmondwike Secondary School for over 33 years. Headmaster Mr Samuel presented Mr Sandiford with a cheque on behalf of past and present pupils and staff.

He was a single man, who had trained at Bradford Technical College and in 1982 was living in Brighouse. In retirement he planned to buy a camera with the money presented to him.

I remember him from my years at the school as being a pleasant and generous man.

In my first year in woodwork I made a wood spatula in his class, which was so good my mum used it for cooking for many years.

In the second year I made a rather more impressive tray.

I recall only a couple of us in the class completed the task and when I think back now, he must have given me a lot of help, as the workmanship is rather good.

It also stood the test of time, as I still have the tray in my house nearly 30 years later.
