Octopush stars pool their talent

A TEAM of 17 players from Batley represented the North of England at a regional octopush tournament at Newport, South Wales last Saturday.

Fiona Maynard, pictured below, was the only Batley player in the Under-11 category and was also the only player to win a gold medal. They beat teams from the South East, South West and Wales.

A total of nine players from Batley made up the North Under-16 team while the North Development team involved players from Manchester and Rochdale.

The Batley team played really well coming second and only losing to South West team 4-2. This team played their best octupush to date and now they are looking forward to the National Championships in June which will be held in Plymouth where they are aiming to take the top spot.

A team including seven Batley players played for the North Under-13 team and had several hard matches and did not win a game but gained valuable experience. Two players were attending their first tournament.

Next week the players will be swimming in relay teams to swim a mile underwater for Sports Relief.

n Junior octopush sessions are held at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre every Sunday from 5pm until 6pm. If you can swim 10 lengths and can touch the bottom of the deep end then why not give it a try, it’s a great team game.
