Only five clubs had accepted the invite to play in the competition, which was suggested after the Championship and League 1 seasons were cancelled.

Batley Bulldogs and Dewsbury Rams are both willing to take part after securing a Covid-19 testing plan through Kirklees Council.

Any potential tournament will rely on the safe return of supporters with fans set to be allowed back into stadia at a limited capacity from October 1.

The RFL had hoped for more than five teams who were willing to take part in the proposed competition, with a prize pot of £250,000 set aside when holding a tournament for lower league clubs was first suggested.

The five clubs willing to compete met remotely earlier this week to discuss the logistical challenges and what form the competition might take.

Super League clubs returned to action earlier this month with a number of measures and restrictions in place.

Games have so far been behind closed doors but the return of supporters will mean further due diligence is required.
