Penalty lapse costly for Boys

BATLEY Boys suffered their first defeat in the Pennine League Championship when they were edged out in their top-of-the table clash at Upton.

The game was marred when Upton’s Ben Marley suffered a broken leg but the game continued when he was moved behind the posts to wait for an ambulance.

Batley opened the scoring with a converted try only for Upton to hit back and take a 10-6 lead.

Upton scored again early in the second half but Batley fought back to level at 16-16 and then looked to have snatched victory with a drop-goal only to concede a late penalty which the visitors goaled to snatch the points.

Dewsbury Moor welcomed National Cup winners Queens to Heckmondwike Road but despite putting in a brave performance, they went down 30-12 in the Premier Division.

Moor took an early lead with a Peter Robinson try and Andy Robinson conversion before Phil Shotton, Robert Ashton and Anthony Boardman all went close.

Queens introduced the influential James Brown, who sent James Watson over for a try, which Jake Doyle goaled to level.

James Delaney, Matt Shaw and Ryan Johnson made strong runs at the start of the second half but were met by stubborn defence.

Queens then hit a purple patch as they put together good attacking moves to take a 24-6 lead.

Shotton, Ashton, Wayne Wilson and Danny Wardman all went close as Moor attempted to fightback.

Peter Robinson and Dean Arundel combined and the latter put in a neat grubber kick for Lee Burton to score a well worked try which was converted by Andy Robinson.
