Remarkable Liversedge end season with five wins

Tino Chibaro was among the goalscorers as Liversedge defeated Clipstone last Thursday on their way to securing their place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Jonathan Rimmington’s men were cast adrift at the foot of the table at the beginning of march but an unbelievable run has seen them take 32 points from 17 games in 57 days.

Liversedge went into their final four matches of the season — to be played in just eight days — with relegation still a possibility.

A 4-0 win over Armthorpe the previous Tuesday was followed up with an equally impressive 4-1 success over Clipstone just two days later.

Tom Brook gave Sedge a 15th minute lead, which they held until half-time.

Benny Igiehon struck twice in the space of six minutes to give his side breathing space and although Clipstone pulled a goal back, Tinotenda Chibaro struck in the 82nd minute to put Sedge on the brink of survival.

Liversedge’s biggest crowd of the season were in attendance last Saturday, swelled by a decent following from Cleethorpes.

Sedge secured their survival as Vaughan Redford’s 80th minute goal was enough to see them take all three points.

They travelled to Retford United for Tuesday’s final game with no pressure but, despite feeling jaded following a hectic run of matches, Rimmington’s man extended their winning run to five straight matches.

Bradley Johnston gave Retford a 10th minute lead but Robert Thomas levelled matters before half-time.

It remained all square entering the final stages when Joe Walton struck with an 89th minute winner.

Victory was enough to lift Sedge into 14th place in the table — nine points above the relegation zone and plans will have already started to build on the impressive end to the campaign next sesason.

Pontefract Collieries suffered a 6-1 defeat at home to Handsworth Parramore on Tuesday as their relegation was confirmed alongside Brigg Town and Nostell MW.
