Gilchrist announced he would be stepping down on Wednesday morning, although he took charge of the side for the final time at Bridlington that evening.

The Liversedge committee have thanked Gilchrist for his efforts and acted swiftly to appoint from within the club ahead of tomorrow’s derby against Northern Counties East League Premier Division leaders Thackley.

Riordan is one of Liversedge’s longest serving players and has captained the side, while Thompson is a young manager who has been in charge of the reserve team for the last season and a half.

Liversedge could still seek a permanent replacement for Gilchrist but it was felt Riordan and Thompson were best placed to keep the current squad together in the immediate future.

Gilchrist will have been proud of the way his side battled back to earn a point in his final game in charge at Bridlington on Wednesday.

Sedge fell behind to an early Craig Hogg goal and Joel Ramm doubled the home side’s advantage after 14 minutes.

Warrick Charlton reduced the arrears after 58 minutes before Ben Grech-Brooksbank levelled with a stunning 25-yard effort but Hogg put Bridlington back in front with his second after 63 minutes.

Liversedge made the long trip with only one substitute and when Grech-Brooksbank suffered a bout of cramp, the visitors were reduced to 10 men for a spell.

They showed great heart and two minutes from full-time Gibril Bojang popped up to make it 3-3, ensuring Sedge left with the point that gave a satisfactory end to Gilchrist’s reign in charge.
