Roberts cheers Dewsbury Rams coach Jowitt

DEWSBURY Rams coach Warren Jowitt is delighted with the way new signing Rob Roberts has acquitted himself during the first four weeks of pre-season training.

Some supporters questioned the decision to sign the experienced forward but Jowitt believes Roberts could play a key role in Dewsbury’s season.

Jowitt said: “Rob came with a bit of a reputation and some supporters turned their noses up when we signed him but his attitude has been second to none.

“He brings leadership qualities to the squad as well as a wealth of knowledge about the game and he has been very good to have around the place.

“I firmly believe that Rob Roberts has been one of the best playing forwards of my era.”

It will be Roberts’s first full pre-season in two years after injuries delayed his return to action and Jowitt is looking forward to getting the best out of him.

Although Jowitt has yet to decide who will captain the side he was impressed with the way Dominic Brambani took over the role midway through last term. Adam Hayes has also shone in the early pre-season sessions and is another obvious candidate.

Dewsbury have handed a two-week trial to Huddersfield Academy player Elliot Cosgrove, who has recently returned from a stint playing in Australia.

The Rams will hold a meet the players night for supporters on Wednesday December 1, starting around 7.30pm. It is also the final day for fans to snap up the cheaper season tickets.

Chairman Mark Sawyer continues to be encouraged by ticket sales, which are reported to be up by around 40 on the same time last year, but stresses that there will be no extension to the deal.

After December 1 an adult standing ticket will rise from £80 to £95, while seating prices go up from £95 to £110.

There are also some impressive deals for concessions, children and a new category, which allows 16-18 year olds to buy season tickets at a reduced rate. Visit www.dewsbury rams.co.uk for full details or call 01924 465489.

The Rams have now confirmed the dates for their two home pre-season friendlies against Super League sides, plus the Boxing Day derby at Batley Bulldogs.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats will visit Tetley’s Stadium on Sunday January 16, while the Rams play their annual match against Bradford Bulls the following week (Sunday, January 23).

Jowitt added: “I’m really looking forward to the friendlies to see our new players in action.

“Kyle Bibb is another to be going well in pre-season and he has come to the club with a different outlook on things.

“Boxing Day is a good event for both clubs as people like to get out and watch a game of rugby over Christmas.

“Last year, myself, Karl Harrison, Batley chairman Kevin Nicholas and our president Jack Addy were all shovelling snow off the pitch at 8am to get the game on.

“I doubt you would get coaches at many other clubs doing that but we would have no problem in going up to Batley to help them out if the weather is bad again this year.”
