Boxing Day victory would provide Rams’ party tonic

Dewsbury Rams coach Glenn Morrison will hope his side can provide the perfect tonic to the club’s festivities with victory over Batley on Boxing Day (ko noon).

The Rams completed a league double over Batley last season, although Morrison has yet to taste victory in the traditional Christmas clash.

Dewsbury have arranged a party back at Tetley’s Stadium following Friday’s game at Batley when players and coaches will join supporters.

Morrison admits victory over the Bulldogs would help kick-start the festivities and is determined his side will return with the bragging rights.

Morrison said: “We have a Christmas party back at the club when the fans will be joined by the players and we want to be able to enjoy ourselves having got the bragging rights.

“Everybody is putting their hands up wanting to play, which makes it really tough to pick the final squad.

“It is not all about who will play in this game but it’s about the whole squad being together for the whole season.”

Morrison is mindful, also, at picking up injuries at what is a crucial time in the pre-season programme.

Wayne Godwin has recovered fully from the arm injury which curtailed his campaign last term, while new signing Byron Smith is eager to make his Rams debut against the side where he spent six successful seasons.

Morrison added: “Byron is an experienced head, which is what we wanted in the forwards having lost Ewan Dowes to retirement.

“He has settled in well and is keen for a run out against his old club but I’m also conscious at trying a few different things out and I don’t want people getting injured.

“Godwin is right to go but I’m not sure if I will use him or not yet.”
