Rams secure fourth home win on spin

Dewsbury Rams consolidated their place in the Kingstone Press Championship play-off places thanks to a 22-12 victory over Barrow Raiders.

Jonathan Schofield was handed a start at hooker following his impressive showing against Batley the previous week and he turned in another fine display and was again on the scoresheet.

The lively Schofield caught the Barrow defence flat footed as he nipped through a gap.

He offloaded to Dale Morton and was on hand to collect a return pass when the winger was held short to force his was over after seven minutes.

Dewsbury put Barrow back on defence and Kieran Hyde launched a towering up and under which full-back Liam Campbell spilled and Hyde was on hand to regather and score.

Bobbie Goulding tagged on both conversions and the Rams led 12-0 after as many minutes.

Twice the scrambling Barrow defence denied Dewsbury attacks as the home side threatened to pull away.

Visiting scrum-half Sean Casey was sin-binned for preventing a quick play-the-ball but the Rams were unable to capitalise as Barrow’s defence tightened.

Adam Clay made a superb 80-metre break but was pulled back by Hyde in the act of scoring and the Rams led 12-0 at half-time.

Matthew Haggerty switched to half-back at half-time and he gave Barrow more attacking chances.

The visitors pulled a try back after 48 minutes when Dean McGilvray raced through a gap and Haggerty converted.

It was another switch that proved decisive as Karl Pryce moved from full-back to the wing and when Goulding chipped wide, Pryce leapt to gather and score out wide.

But Barrow then set up a tense finish when Max Viper broke through and sent Nathan Mossop over. Haggerty’s conversion reduced the arrears to 16-12.

Barrow attacked again trying to force a last minute try but the Raiders knocked on and Matthew Tebb gathered before looping a pass out for Pryce to race away for his second. Goulding converted and the Rams celebrated another home success.
