Cleckheaton Under-9s won the Sandal Junior Rugby festival last Sunday after victories in all five of their matches.

Cleck defeated Old Brods three tries to nil in their opening match as Sam Booth was among the scorers, while Thomas King produced some fine defensive work.

Cleckheaton conceded an early try to Littleborough but fought back to win 3-1 with William Wilkinson among the scorers, while Declan Wilson produced some excellent tackles.

Another impressive defensive effort prevented Sheffield Tigers from scoring, while good running by William Carden and a superb overall display by Samuel Jackson sealed a 3-0 win.

Cleckheaton’s game against Castleford was much closer with both sides showing attacking flair, but more solid defence and a superb try by Mackenzie Sheldrake earned the Moorenders a 2-0 win.

It was clear in the final game against Barnsley, that Cleckheaton had given their all.

Barnsley got the upper hand initially but Cleckheaton again fought back with William Nicholson’s defence bursting try securing a well-earned 4-2 victory on an excellent day for the Under-9s.

Cleckheaton Under-8s also travelled to the Sandal festival, which attracted 24 teams at this age group.

Cleck went behind early in their opening game against Ripon but strong running led to two tries for Jenson Senior and he set up two more for Samuel Hemingway.

Finley Supple (two) and William McIntosh also scored to seal a 7-5 win.

Cleckheaton drew 3-3 with hosts Sandal as Senior had a late try disallowed, while they conceded a last gasp try to lose 5-4 against a well drilled Harrogate side.

Joel Pratt and Isaac Prouse produced their best performances of the day to help Cleck defeat Old Brods 9-3 with Freddie McElveen setting up several tries, while Prouse scored a couple of tries as Cleckheaton defeated Scunthorpe in their final game to end with three wins, a draw and one defeat

Player of the tournament was shared by Senior and Finley Supple, for his 15 tries.
