Sedge eye United double

On the back of last Saturday’s terrific draw at leaders Scarborough Athletic – a game which the Clayborners could easily have won but for three late goals by the home side – Liversedge are now gearing up for back-to-back games against second placed Retford United.

Retford are level on 39 points with Scarborough but have a far inferior goal difference and have also played a game more than The Seadogs.

The Badgers visit Clayborn tomorrow (3pm) before Sedge make the return trip to Cannon Park on December 17 and if Billy Miller’s men can take someting from either game it would shake things up further at the top.

Tadcaster Albion and Bridlington Town will be hoping Sedge can do them a favour over the next fortnight as they are within striking distance of the top-two.

Liversedge produced one of their best displays of the season at Scarborough and looked well on course to register a shock win after building up a 3-0 lead with goals from Nathan Cartman, Jamie Wasley and Alex Hallam.

The latter’s 70th minute strike appeared to have ended Scarborough’s hopes but the home side pulled one back soon after and as Athletic were roared on by a bumper 465 crowd, they added two more in the final six minutes to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.

Wasley and Cartman played up front last Saturday after in-form Dave Bordman was ruled out with injury following gruelling games against Hall Road Rangers and Garforth Town the previous week.

Miller could be left with a dilema whether to recall Bordman or stick with the same side who performed so well on the east coast.

The draw leaves Liversedge 11th in the Premier Division table at the halfway point in the season but Miller and his side know that if they can reproduce the same level of performance as at Scarborough, they are sure to climb into the top 10.

After the double header against Retford, comes the eagerly anticipated Boxing Day derby at home to Brighouse Town.

Tickets for Liversedge’s annual dinner will be available at tomorrow’s match, priced £35. It will be held at the Holiday Inn Tong on Friday March 30 when the guest speaker will be former Liverpool star Alan Kennedy.
