The Sharks appealed for rugby league supporters from across West Yorkshire to turn up to Leeds Road and help kick-start fundraising for their injured star, who suffered a broken neck in the previous week’s game against Elland.

Shaw Cross officials had been overwhelmed by the worldwide response in the build up to the game and it proved to be an emotional day as a large crowd descended.

Cross had been given permission to postpone their A team game so the entire club could turn out in support and around £2,000 was raised for the Ryan Glynn fund.

The Sharks could have been forgiven for letting the emotion get to them but they produced a thoroughly professional performance to defeat Stanningley 32-20, as they recorded a third straight victory and it was fitting that Shaw Cross moved top of the table on Saturday night.

The Sharks produced some fine flowing rugby and all six of their tries came from the backs.

Centre Shaun Squires scored a hat-trick and landed two goals, while there was a try apiece for full-back Josh Rymell and wingers Phil Wood and Chris Walker.

Kev Dickens kicked the other two goals for the Sharks, who led 24-10 at half-time.

Shaw Cross also paid tribute to Stanningley, who helped make the occasion a huge success.

Dean Parker (two), Liam Chadwick and Josh Roberts were the Stanningley’s scorers, with Russ Cartmell landing two goals.

Shaw Cross go in search of a fourth straight win on Saturday when they travel to Castleford Panther, who have just a point from their three games
