Spen athlete Jenny receives accolade

LIVERSEDGE athlete Jenny Walsh has received an excellence award at a celebration of success hosted by Dame Kelly Holmes and Sybil Ruscoe.

The ceremony, held at The Gibson Hall, London, helped mark nine years of Aviva’s ‘On Camp with Kelly’.

Amongst the guests were international athletes past and present including Liz Yelling, Diane Modahl, Zara Hyde Peters, Alison Wyeth, Marilyn Okoro and Tim Hutchings, along with over 30 members of ‘On Camp with Kelly’ including Jenny, tutors and camp supervisors, parents and coaches.

Jenny was one of four athletes to receive and Excellent Achievement Award after she reached the 1,500 metres final at the World Junior Championships, while others were collected by Mitch Goose, Charlotte Purdue and Jess Coulson.

Jenny said: “The celebration event was a wonderful occasion to get together after an amazing year.

“It was great to receive the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ Excellent Achievement Award in recognition of my place as a finalist in the World Junior Championships, then to round off my year I really enjoyed representing GB at the European Cross Country Championships and helping our team bring home the gold.

“Being part of such an inspiring group of athletes through On Camp with Kelly, I have taken so much from the educational and training experiences, which have helped my development as an athlete this year.

“Kelly has committed so much time and energy to the programme and the support she has given me has made a huge difference.”

Dame Kelly Holmes added: “It was a fantastic night and really brought home to me how far the programme has come since early 2004.

“My personal goals for the programme have definitely been surpassed with a great team behind me.

“It has been a brilliant and very rewarding journey working with so many talented athletes.”

n Dewsbury Road Runners had a hectic time of things over the Christmas and new year period, with athletes competing in various events over the festive period.

In the 28th Dewsbury Parkrun held on Christmas Day morning over 5Km Haseeb Raja was the highest local finisher in 19th place with a time of 24.50.

Bernard Disken was 21st in 24.50, Anne McQueen 37th in a time of 37.10 and Laura McQueen 38th in 37.10.
