Sports stars of the future earn praise

TWO teams from Batley Octopush club attended the Junior National Championships held in Plymouth last weekend.

Each side played six games, with Batley Under-16s finishing fourth and the Under-13s fifth.

The Under-16s lost 1-0 to Plymouth, who came third, and 1-0 to a South West side who went on to win the tournament.

They were also edged out 3-1 by Orkney, who were second, in a game which saw Batley vice captain Tom Pitchforth save a penalty.

Octopush penalties involve the puck being placed five metres from the goal, with two attackers battling to score against the goalkeeper.

The Under-13s also had some close games, including a draw against the South West winners.

n There was a special guest at Howden Clough JFC’s Under-14s presentation last Saturday when Dewsbury boxing star Gary Sykes handed out the awards at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre.

The former British super featherweight champion said it was good to acknowledge achievements of youngsters in different sports.

The Under-14 A team pushed for the title before finishing a creditable third.

Wasim Tai scooped two awards as he was managers player of the year and players player.

Parents player was Matty Woods, most improved player went to George Spencer, while Joe Woodhouse took the match point award.

The Under-14s C team finished sixth in the Charles Rice League.

There was a three-way tie for players player and parents player of the season, with Ryan Smithson, Jack Hinchcliffe and Jamie Bradley scooping the award, while the managers player was Ryan Smithson.

n Dewsbury Rangers JFC will hold their 14th annual gala this Sunday at Earlsheaton Technical College, with games starting at 9.30am.

Around 124 teams, from Under-7 Colts to Under-14s are expected to attend, with 31 sides from hosts Dewsbury Rangers due to compete at various age groups.

Entry is by programme, priced £2, and car parking is available at the venue.

n The Heavy Woollen Sunday Football League will play with a reduced number of teams from September after seven of last season’s sides folded.

The league will revert to four divisions, with 45 sides competing, and the new campaign begins on Sunday September 2.

Last week’s annual meeting saw new sides Shears Athletic and Jardy Boys accepted to the league.

Athletic are based at the Shears pub in Liversedge, while Jardy Boys are from Birstall and have enjoyed success in the Spen Valley League.

Alan Squires will take over from James Parker as president of the league, while all other officers remain the same.

n Dewsbury Road Runners staged their second Dewsbury 5K Park Run.

n Hanging Heaton Golf Club held their Extension Trophy, an 18 hole medal competition last weekend, which was won by Martin Scargill (handicap 9) 66.

Other leading scores: L Scott (12) 67, P Walton (21) 68, G Clay (24) 68, M Osbourne (15) 68, P Titman (18) 68.

The best gross was Josh Martin with 74 and there were 88 competitors who took part.

n East Bierley Golf Club Ladies Section held the Mrs Bean Salver competition last week, which was won by Katie Barraclough (handicap 5) 68nett, with Jackie Barraclough (5) 69nett second.

n Despite the river Calder bursting its banks last Friday, by Sunday, the Ladywood Lakes complex was in fine condition to host the second annual Tony Delaney Memorial Trophy angling competition.

Participants were made up of Tony’s family, friends and members of Dewsbury Moor ARLFC.

A tightly contested match was won by Danny Brierley (39.14lbs) closely followed by Paul Coop (38.8) made up of carp and roach.

Organiser Tony Delaney-jnr thanked everyone who attended for their donations to Dewsbury Moor’s development fund.

n Dewsbury Moor ARLFC are seeking an open age coach for the coming season.
