Trojans push Fryston close in cracker

Thornhill Trojans produced a terrific fightback but came up just short as they were edged out 26-24 by Fryston Warriors in a cracking Pennine League Premier Division clash.

The Warriors raced into a 16-0 lead but Thornhill never gave up and played their part in a pulsating contest.

The prolific kicking of Fryston’s Aaron Dobek proved key as several tries were scored out wide but the stand-off held his nerve to kick his side to victory.

Ben Eastwood and Ben Kendall returned for Thornhill and both slotted in well, with the latter named man-of-the-match.

Loose forward Scott Horner squeezed over for an unconverted try in the corner and Andy Matthews crossed for Fryston’s second which Dobek converted from wide out.

A soft tackle then allowed Steve Scott to burst through Thornhill’s defence and over for a try, which Dobek converted.

Thornhill’s first real impression came when Joss Ratcliffe broke from his own half, kicked forward, gathered and sent the supporting Joel Gibson between the posts. Gibson converted.

Gibson and Jordan Lowther combined to put Joss Ratcliffe over for an unconverted try but as Thornhill were gaining momentum, Lee Land broke away to score in the corner and Dobek kicked a brilliant touchline goal.

Thornhill had Sam Ratcliffe sin-binned for an off the ball challenge before half-time.

A string Anthony Harris drives took the Trojans close before Gibson fed Joss Ratcliffe, who ducked his way over for his second try.

Ryan Fenton sped away for a try and Gibson’s conversion took Thornhill to within two points at 22-20.

Fryston winger Andy Matthews crossed for his second try but Bendikas replied with an unconverted score to give Thornhill renewed hope.

As the clocked ticked towards full-time, Thornhill threw everything they could muster at Fryston but a final attack was ended when Warriors intercepted the pass and the Trojans just ran out of time as the visitors hung on.
