Trojans swoop to capture Haigh ahead of home clash

Thornhill Trojans have swooped to sign hooker Luke Haigh ahead of Saturday’s first home game in the Pennine League Premier Division.

Haigh played at Thornhill until 2006 when he signed for Dewsbury Rams following a string of displays which saw the Trojans progress to the Challenge Cup third round, and a tie at Catalan Dragons, and reach the National Conference League Grand Final.

Haigh was released by Hunslet Hawks this week and will make his second debut for the Trojans against Hunslet Old Boys on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).

Thornhill will be aiming to build on a 34-14 opening day win over Halifax Irish in a game which saw Jake Wilson, Jordan Lowther and Andrew Bates impress.

Liam Morley was on the end of a passing move to open the scoring, Lowther grabbed an individual try, while Bates landed a conversion and penalty as Thornhill led 12-0 at half-time.

Jake Hickling extended the lead with a long range try, which Bates improved.

Further tries from Anthony Harris, Sam Ratcliffe and Danny Ratcliffe and two further Bates goals completed the win, despite a brave fightback by Halifax.

n Wyke grabbed a share of the spoils with a late try in their Division One derby with Odsal Sedburgh.

The sides were locked 12-12 at half-time after Warren Pitman bagged a brace of tries for Wyke, both converted by Andrew Patchett.

Simon Owen sent Paul Farnell over only for Odsal to hit back to lead 24-16.

Patchett ended a fine move with a converted try but again Odsal struck to lead 28-22.

Ian Watkinson’s teasing grubber kick struck a post and rebounded for Aaron Priestley to score and Patchett’s goal saw honours end all square.
