Win sees Birstall clear of drop zone

BIRSTALL moved six points clear of the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division relegation zone last Saturday thanks to an impressive 21-run success at Hunslet Nelson.

Birstall were well led by overseas player Connor Williams, as he top scored with 61.

Derek Hammill bowled a terrific spell of 7-27 as Birstall were bowled out for163.

However, although Joe Smith hit 37 not out in reply Saif Ur Rehman claimed 5-36 and Craig Wood 3-44 as the home side were bowled out for 142.

Ossett slipped a step closer to relegation as they suffered a 112-run defeat at Altofts, who are up to fifth.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers have slipped to eighth but they should be safe from the drop as they are 19 points clear of second-bottom Wakefield St Michaels.

They suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Wakefield Thornes last Saturday.

Parish were in deep trouble early on as they were reduced to 16-7 in the face of impressive bowling spells from Scott Wightman (6-46) and Derek Colquhoun (3-34).

David Whitelock (31), Bradley Drake (30) and no11 Daniel Hope (17no) fought back but Parish were eventually dismissed for 101 in the 25th over.

Nathan Glynn (25) and Richard Foster (52) steered Thornes to a comfortable win, passing their total inside 16 overs.

Another match with an early finish came at Wakefield St Michaels as they were bowled out for 146, with New Farnley cruising to a seven wicket win.

Farnley moved to within four points of leaders Wrenthorpe with the top two sides clashing this Saturday in a game which will go a long way to deciding the title.

Methley blew the title race wide open last Saturday when they earned a four-point success over Wrenthorpe.
