Woodlands book HW Cup final date

Pieter Swanepoel’s men recorded a crushing 134-run victory over Congs and they meet Huddersfield League big guns Hoylandswaine in the final at Ossett on Sunday August 2.

Woodlands had successfully chased down 260 to defeat Hanging Heaton and boost their Bradford League title hopes on Saturday but must have feared the worst when they were bowled out for 189 by Congs.

Jordon Laban top scored with 49 from 78 balls, including seven fours and a six, while wicketkeeper Gregory Finn made 32 from 64 balls as Woodlands toiled in the face of impressive bowling from Mustafa Rafique (3-39) and captain Gareth Phillips (3-28).

Congs had scored 1,048 runs in the previous three rounds of the cup but were dismissed for just 55 in 23.2 overs as Woodlands dominated.

Overseas star Sarfraz Ahmed instigated the Congs collapse, claiming 4-10 in nine overs, while Elliot Richardson (3-29) and Duncan Snell (3-10) also impressed as Joe Greaves (11) and Luke Holroyd (13) were the only visiting batsmen to reach double figures.

Hoylandswaine reached their first Heavy Woollen final as they defeated Townville by 37 runs.

Hoylandswaine posted 268-9 as Alex Morris top scored with 76 and G Nawaz made 45.

Peter Hepworth (3-27) was pick of the Townville bowling.

The home side made a decent challenge to the total with Conor Harvey (62), Nick Bresnan (40) and Chris Holliday (31) among the runs but they were bowled out for 231 as K Williams (3-61) and B Potter (3-39) impressed.

Ossett Second team travel to Pudsey Congs in the Crowther Cup semi-final this Sunday, while Woodlands seconds face a replay against Huddersfield side Scholes.

Methley progressed to a third successive Jack Hampshire Trophy final and will have home advantage when they take on Wrenthorpe in the Central Yorkshire League’s showpiece game on Sunday August 16.

CYL Premier Division leaders Methley restricted Wakefield Thornes to 143-9 with Marcus Walmsley claiming 3-23, before hitting 72 to guide his side to 147-6, despite Jared Warner claiming 5-26.

Wrenthorpe dismissed Hunslet Nelson for 148 in the other semi as Greg Wood claimed 4-27 and then steered his side to a seven wicket win with an unbeaten 69.

Ossett’s hopes of winning a second team treble were ended when they suffered a 26-run defeat to Birstall in the Wheatley Cup semi-final last Sunday.

Hopton Mills were dismissed for 175 and suffered a six-wicket defeat by Carlton in he other semi.

Birstall now tackle Carlton in the Wheatley Cup final at Wakefield Thornes on Sunday August 9.
